A Message from Friends of Medicare’s Executive Director

A Message from Friends of Medicare’s Executive Director

I want to start out by thanking each one of you, our organizational members for your ongoing support of Friends of Medicare. We are only able to continue our advocacy work because of your support. This year has been a busy one for Friends of Medicare. As an organization we went through staff changes, growth and renewal. We re-examined our priorities and continued to push for an expanded and quality health care system that is there for all based on need and not ability to pay.

We focused our work in three strategic areas: a single-payer pharmacare plan for all Canadians, quality seniors care, and dealing with the privatization by stealth that we have seen through the past several years. We met with hundreds of Albertans, with seniors, labour, professional associations and community groups to discuss and hear directly from them about the ways that our health care can be improved. We shared this knowledge with MLA’s, MPs and Senators of all political stripes in an attempt to impact change, and were an oft-quoted organization by media when it comes to issues that impact Albertans and access to health care.

Our work will continue in the upcoming year with a sense of urgency, and a need to engage and organize all who support and understand the importance of public health. Our challenge will be to keep health care at the forefront of political discourse and decisions that will need to be made in the upcoming election.

We invite you to join us in this challenge by joining and supporting the work of Friends of Medicare: become a member, join our e-mail list and share our work with your family, friends and neighbors. Invite us to speak to your local or community group about issues affecting our health care and what we’re doing to protect and strengthen it. Health care matters to all Albertans, and we cannot sit idly by while others decide what type of health care we will receive.

On behalf of our Board and Staff we hope that you take time to celebrate the holidays and to re-energize for what will undoubtedly be a very busy 2019. Thank you again for your ongoing support and we look forward to what we can accomplish in the upcoming year.
