It’s hard to believe that 2019 is almost over. So much has happened since you last heard from us! Thanks to all of you who voted for public health care in the recent federal election. Together, we made sure our voices were heard. The newly elected government will be convened on December 5th. We look forward to working with all parties to protect, improve and expand Canada’s public health care system. Here are a few ways you can help us do that.
The Cambie Case: Submit a letter to the editor
The Charter challenge against public health care in BC is finally coming to an end. As the closing arguments wrap up in court over the next week, our colleagues at the BC Health Coalition are asking public health care advocates across the country to submit letters to the editor to their local newspapers. They’ve created a tool with a template to make it easy for you. All you have to do is enter your name and postal code, and letters will be sent to your local papers with the click of a button.
Canada Needs Pharmacare Now!
Thanks to the hard work of advocates like you, pharmacare was a key issue in the federal election. For the first time, three of the major parties (the Liberals, the NDP and the Green Party) committed to pharmacare in their election platforms. This is a historic moment for public health care in Canada!
New Joint Statement
Last week, we joined over 150 national and provincial organizations from across the country calling on all parties to work together to adopt universal pharmacare within this government’s mandate. The joint Pharmacare Now Statement calls for this new program to be public, universal, comprehensive, accessible and portable.
This essential new program could soon be a reality, but we need your help to make it happen! Email us to add your organization’s name to the joint statement. Please note that the language of the statement is fixed. At this time, we are only accepting signatures from national and provincial organizations.
Another way to show your support for pharmacare is by contacting your federal Member of Parliament (MP). Our colleagues at the Canadian Labour Congress have created a tool that will allow you to call your MP to schedule a meeting with the click of a button. To prepare for a meeting with your MP, check out our latest Pharmacare Mythbuster and our handout on how Canada can save money with universal, public pharmacare.
Let’s make sure everyone in Canada can access the medications they need!
